A prominent Sheboygan County family has made a game-changing contribution to a local nonprofit agency. Richard and Kristin Bemis have made a $1 million gift in the form of a four-year pledge to support Habitat for Humanity Lakeside’s ambitious strategic plan. The concept calls for building five affordable homes each year beginning in 2027, as well as funding the organization’s affordable home-repair programs.

Upon receiving the pledge, Habitat Lakeside Executive Director, Le’Shay Guy, said that “We are beyond grateful to Richard and Kristin Bemis for recognizing the need for affordable housing in Sheboygan County and Habitat Lakeside’s ability to help fill this need.” She went on to say that “Affordable housing is the foundation of generational wealth for a family and the foundation of a healthy, vibrant community.”
The gift coincides with Friday’s commencement of Habitat Lakeside’s 53rd home, this one in the Sheboygan Cleveland Park neighborhood, a project that exemplifies where the Bemis’ gift will have an important impact. Lakeside’s Construction Manager Jon Hoffman said that the Bemis’s generosity will help the organization broaden its shoulders and reach more people like Kewanna Ashford who is the intended buyer of that home. As part of the agreement, Ashford is contributing 250 volunteer hours to Habitat.
