MADISON, WI (WSAU) The Wisconsin Elections Commission is sending out a new batch of address verification cards to “inactive” voters.
Those who are registered but haven’t cast a ballot in the last four years are getting the mailing. They are asked to verify their address, or be removed from the voting rolls.
In 2019, the last time the mailing was sent out, just 14% responded. The 98,000 voters who didn’t respond were the subject of a lawsuit about whether their names should be purged from the voter rolls. The state Supreme Court ruled earlier this year that only local election officials can maintain voter rolls. Any voter purge from the new mailing will likely also be challenged in court.
State law requires that inactive voters respond to address verification requests within 30 days.
Any voter who is erroneously removed from the voter rolls can still vote on Election Day under Wisconsin’s same-day registration law.
