Many in the area are remembering October 11th as the 22nd anniversary of the worst vehicle accident in Wisconsin history. That accident occurred a mile south of Cedar Grove on I-43 when a collision in the southbound lanes, invisible to trailing traffic in dense fog, resulted in a chain-reaction accident that eventually involved 50 vehicles. 10 persons, mostly from Sheboygan County, perished in the crash and nearly 40 others were injured. Another crash several miles away also took another life.
The cause of the crash was attributed to dense fog, and drivers who continued to travel normal speeds despite the zero visibility at the crash site. The I-43 crash took the lives of David Arendt, Daniel Balint and his son William, Eric Behling, Nadine Boltz, Richard Doll, Allen Domke, Daniel Janquart, Rachel Matt and Kenneth Rauwerdink, and also Mallory Rinn who died at the same time a few miles away. A memorial now stands on Sauk Trail Road a half mile north of the Highway 32 intersection with I-43.
