Damage from Tuesday morning’s storms required the partial, temporary closure of two Sheboygan Parks while crews complete cleanup, along with closure of four south side beaches. Those storms dumped torrential rains accompanied by 60-plus mile an hour winds which blew down trees in many parts of Sheboygan County, especially the northern portion. Although not as extensive as the June 15, 2022 storm that blocked many streets on Sheboygan’s north side, the damage did put Department of Public Works crews into emergency response on Tuesday, and then into cleanup mode which made significant progress on Wednesday. But that still left safety concerns at two City parks.
All but the south playground at Evergreen Park was closed on Wednesday while crews removed storm debris, and that should be mostly complete by sometime today. A section of Lakeview Park which borders the Regional Wastewater Treatment Facility was cordoned off due to flooding, which the City said posed a potential public health issue.
An overflow of untreated or partially-treated sewage wasn’t explicitly blamed, but high bacteria counts from Wisconsin DNR monitors at Kohler-Andrae, Blue Harbor, King Park and the Kite Beach at Clara Avenue forced closure of those beaches until concentrations come back down.
