FORT MCCOY, WI (WHBL) – We’re learning a bit more about the situation for Afghan refugees at Fort McCoy.
The Department of Homeland Security has confirmed reports of food shortages at the fort, although they indicate the situation has improved. Homeland says there are also shortages of new clothes for the refugees, many of whom are wearing what they wore when they fled Kabul weeks ago.
We’re also learning that there are now nearly 13 thousand refugees at the fort – many more than the last official headcount of just seven thousand.
Refugees at Fort McCoy say they want to leave and get on with their lives. No one is saying when they will be allowed to leave, or where they will go.
Meanwhile, six people who recently traveled to the United States after fleeing the Taliban in Afghanistan have been diagnosed with measles, officials said Tuesday.
One case was confirmed Sept. 5 at Fort McCoy. The rest of the cases are reportedly in Virginia.
