In the interest of helping grow the local food economy, the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection has given grants to six Wisconsin family farms, two of them located here in east-central Wisconsin.
The “Buy Local, Buy Wisconsin” grants were given to Misfits Homegrown LLC of Manitowoc, and Prairie Folk Farm of Chilton. The two farms now join 134 projects funded by the program out of over 635 applications filed since its beginning in 2008. This latest round of awards totals $200,000 in all.
Misfits, which describes itself as providing homegrown beef, pork, chicken and farm fresh eggs to the community, will use the grant money to improve customer access to its products through enhanced distribution.
Prairie Folk Farm’s owners, Austin and Kristen Pethan, tend a flock of sheep and raise pastured lamb using “rotational grazing” while also producing vegetables on their farm. Their grant will revamp marketing efforts and invest in feed systems innovations.
