A day of grace might be the most we can expect from Lake Michigan as a surge of hot, humid air overspreads Wisconsin for the beginning of this week, prompting warnings about dangerously hot conditions.
While the 70-degree waters can help keep things more moderate along the immediate shoreline, the cooling effect of Lake Michigan is expected to largely break down on Tuesday when dangerously hot conditions are expected everywhere. As a result, an Excessive Heat Watch is en effect from Tuesday afternoon through Tuesday evening. The watch includes Sheboygan and Ozaukee Counties, where the “feels like” temperature may reach as high as 106 degrees, as opposed to the mid-90s today.
Forecasters note that heat-related illnesses increase significantly under such conditions. Persons should drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room and out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors.
The Sheboygan County Division of Public Health wants you to know that cooling sites have been named throughout the County that offer escape from extreme summer weather. And although they don’t provide showers, food or other services, the locations are air conditioned and open to the public, such as libraries and community centers.
