There’s a campaign underway, but this one isn’t political. The campaign is called “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over”, and it’s designed to deter impaired driving and prevent the kind of tragedies seen too often on Labor Day Weekend. The campaign began on Wednesday and runs through September 2nd, during which the NHTSA will work alongside local law enforcement to actively discourage and prevent driving under the influence through a high-visibility presence.
During 2023’s Labor Day Weekend Wisconsin saw 1,365 crashes, with 113 of those involving an impaired driver, and those alone resulting in 9 people losing their lives.
While there’s no way to keep every impaired driver off the road, it’s hoped that people will think before getting behind the wheel after drinking. Make the option of handing over the keys to a sober driver top-of-mind ahead of time when you go out, and if you’re sober, consider taking away the keys of someone you love who’s in no shape to drive. And just in case you do drink and drive, know that there will be extra eyes looking to prevent another Labor Day tragedy – at the cost of an OWI arrest. As expensive as that is, it’s still cheaper than the cost of a lost life any day of the year.
