Plans by the Sheboygan Area School District to build a brand-new Urban Middle School were thrown into question after a survey showed deep concerns over the safety of students, and the impact to the neighborhood and environment.
Superintendent Dr. Jacob Konrath thanked everyone who completed the survey, and said that: “In reviewing the survey data, we found strong support for pursuing a referendum to address our nearly 100-year-old middle schools.” That referendum would request some $126 million to fund the two projects. But the release from the District said that plans to completely replace Urban with a new school on a new site on Najacht and Mill Roads drew much less support than those to rebuild Farnsworth on its current Union Avenue location. Accordingly, the District said that Bray Architects, which developed the original plans, will introduce an alternate plan to rebuild Urban Middle School, while in the process saving the Art Deco building in what many consider a matter of historic preservation. The plan will include solutions for improved parent drop-off and pickup, a new secure entrance easily accessible from the parking lot, appropriately-sized classrooms, a cafeteria with natural light, and increased parking.
That new plan will be presented when the Board of Education meets on Tuesday night, and you can get a look ahead of time by accessing the 6/25/24 Regular Board agenda through this link.
