The air will be warm, but Lake Michigan waters are still cold, and along with high waves that could spell trouble for swimmers looking for a refreshing dip. The National Weather Service has issued a Beach Hazard Statement for the Lake Michigan waters of both Sheboygan and Ozaukee Counties. That advisory is in effect between 10 a.m. and late this Tuesday night.
The expected waves of up to four feet are being labeled “life-threatening”, and the greatest hazard will be found near breakwalls and piers where those structures can help create chaotic currents. But dangerous rip currents could occur anywhere along the beaches, and with water temperatures only 55 degrees, being drawn away from shore in a rip current could expose you to hypothermia. In 55 degree water, experts say you could become exhausted or unconscious and drown in as little as one hour.
With these conditions, the National Weather Service is warning the public to stay out of the water and enjoy the sand instead.
