A trend long established to our south is now making its presence known in the Sheboygan Area. Reports on social media from the Sheboygan Police Department say that there was a recent attempted theft of a Kia in the city that coincided with the area increase.
Regardless of make and model, police reiterate that unattended vehicles should always be locked and valuables removed. However, because of known vulnerabilities in many Kia and Hyundai products, they have become favorite targets of car thieves in the Milwaukee area where groups such as the “Kia Boys” have made a practice of stealing those cars.
Owners of Kia and Hyundai vehicles are being encouraged to speak with their dealership to see if their vehicle qualifies for any theft deterrent software or hardware upgrades. Steering wheel locks, available at auto supply stores, were also pointed to as a good deterrent to theft.
Even as there are vulnerabilities that arise in some modern auto technology, advances in other technologies can work to the advantage, such as in the case of now-popular doorbell cameras and other surveillance systems. The SPD recommended obtaining one if you don’t already have one. And for those who do, verify those systems are in good working order. The SPD says that footage provided by those cameras are often very helpful to police in identifying suspects and solving cases.
