Use of a cell phone while driving might be the reason two persons are dead today. The accident happened about 10 miles west of the City of Fond du Lac on Highway 23 at around 1 p.m. on Thursday. That’s when multiple 911 calls reporting a two-vehicle head-on crash were received at the County Dispatch Center reporting two people, each the driver and lone occupant of their vehicles, unconscious and unresponsive.
Deputies from the Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s Office, Town of Lamartine Fire Department and First Responders, North Fond du Lac Fire and EMS, and Wisconsin State Patrol responded and found both drivers dead at the scene.
An eastbound vehicle, driven by a 19-year-old woman from Rosendale, had reportedly crossed the center line several times before striking a westbound vehicle driven by a 64-year-old man from Ripon. No other persons were involved. Witness statements and initial investigations came to the same conclusion – that a cell phone may have distracted the 19-year-old – but the accident remains under investigation and the identity of the two is still pending.
