A historic Ozaukee County establishment is no more after fire struck on Tuesday afternoon. Various reports say that the fire at the Lake Church Inn started in the kitchen, but an official cause has yet to be announced.
The Ozaukee County Sheriff’s Office says that fire crews responded around 5:30 p.m. to the fire about a mile east of I-43 at Belgium, and fire department crews from that village along with Port Washington, Waubeka, Fredonia, Grafton, Saukville, Random Lake and Cedar Grove all assisted in putting out the blaze.
Ozaukee County Highway “D” was expected to remain closed into this Wednesday morning as the scene is processed and cleaned up.
The Lake Church Inn was built back in 1848, the year Wisconsin became a state, and had been a fixture in northern Ozaukee County ever since.
