The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources said on Friday that five fatal snowmobile accidents have occurred so far in 2023. These are in addition to two fatal crashes that happened in December of ‘22. In all seven fatalities during the current season, collision was the common thread, with all but the most recent two involving fixed objects. One of the two on January 26th involved a collision with another snowmobile, and the other was struck by a pickup truck while crossing a road.
According to Friday’s release the five fatal crashes this month involved single adult operators, ranging from 42 to 68 years old. In addition, four of the five victims were male. All five crashes remain under investigation.
DNR Off-Highway Vehicle Administrator Lieutenant Jacob Holsclaw calls each loss of life a tragedy, saying that “We want everyone to enjoy the fun and the share the trails safely”, and, “We strongly urge snowmobilers to operate within their abilities, keep their speed in check and wait to enjoy adult beverages until they are home.”
