It took extraordinary efforts to get to the victim of a Fond du Lac County snowblower accident on Christmas day, and thanks to some quick thinking and maybe a bit of luck, it looks like the best possible outcome has been secured.
The event in the Town of Alto, northwest of Waupun, began around noon on Sunday when a man in his 70s attempted to clear a clogged snowblower, and lost two fingers in the process. Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s Deputy Andrew Jagdfeld arrived to find an 800-foot-long driveway drifted with several feet of snow, preventing emergency crews from getting rescue vehicles to the victim.
While Deputy Jagdfeld and emergency responders set out on foot, two Fond du Lac County plows were located nearby. It still took 15 minutes of plowing to clear a path for the ambulance which then transported the patient to the hospital.
Fond du Lac County Sheriff Ryan Waldschmidt said that while it’s not uncommon for highway crews to work with his deputies, he said that the quick response, and the ability of the snow plow drivers saved minutes of valuable time compared to carrying a gurney by hand through the drifts, and the patient is now recovering in the hospit
