While Wednesday night’s winter storm didn’t live up to expectations in much of the area, it did set in motion all the workings needed for a White Christmas.
The National Weather Service defines a White Christmas as one with at least one inch of snow on the ground on Christmas day. Lately it’s been too warm for any snowfall to stick around, but that key part is about to change. While today’s temperatures in the mid-30s will likely allow for some melting of last night’s 1-3 inches that fell in the area, this could be the last above-freezing weather we have between now and Christmas. Another 1-3 inches of snow might happen between this afternoon and Saturday while temperatures fall to typical mid-winter values of highs in the 20s and lows in the single digits and teens for most of next week. Add another decent chance for snow by the end of next week, and it just may be time for Santa to wax the runners on his sleigh.
