The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources is asking for public input on its land management plans for three state-owned properties, including the Northern Unit of the Kettle Moraine State Forest.
That State Forest occupies portions of Sheboygan, Fond du Lac and Washington Counties and its stands of trees and undergrowth are being managed under a master plan last approved in 1991. In 2009, a variance was approved that allows 440 acres of timber harvest annually, 140 of them in conifer plantations, and 300 in hardwoods. This maintains a healthier balance of growth that is more native, less prone to disease and is closer to the natural balance. It’s also under the 504 acres scientists say the forest could sustain.
But harvesting those acres also causes noise and alters the landscape. The DNR says it schedules its operations during off-season and low-use hours as much as possible, but hearing from the public is important to get the best balance.
A new master plan is expected to be completed by 2025. In the meantime the DNR wants to continue the 2009 variance.
