All parties are safe after a close call on in icy waters in southern Manitowoc County on Monday afternoon.
Sheriff Dan Hartwig says his department got a call shortly before noon reporting a woman falling through the ice on Pigeon Lake in the Town of Liberty. It was determined that a 31-year-old Chicago, Illinois resident had attempted to catch her dogs that had run onto the frozen lake. While trying to catch them, both dogs and their owner broke through the ice and fell into the water.
By the time responders arrived, a 32-year-old New Holstein man had taken a kayak to rescue the woman, but he also ended up in the water. Both persons were able to get back onto the ice, were rescued by fire department personnel, and transported by ambulance to a local hospital for treatment. The dogs made it back to shore on their own and were kept safe by a Good Samaritan.
The Sheriff thanked the Manitowoc County Joint Dispatch Center, Newton Fire Department, S. Nazianz Fire Department, St. Nazianz First Responders, Valders Fire Department, Valders Ambulance and the Manitowoc Fire and Rescue who all responded to the scene.
