Michael John Frakes was born on August 15, 1971 to Norman and Rita (Hansen) Frakes in
Sheboygan, WI. He attended Sheboygan Falls schools and graduated in 1989 where he
participated in cross country running. He was a Boy Scout and participated in Triathlons, loved
to bike and motorcycle ride, hike and be outside in nature.
He attended Black Hawke Technical School and graduated in 1991 from the Air Frame and
Power Plant Mechanics program. That led to his first work as a mechanic for Jack Schneidehwin
at the New Holstein Airport. Eventually, he earned his pilot’s license and flew single and twin-
engine planes including float planes and then corporate jets for Windway Capitol Corp out of
Sheboygan. He was a photo pilot for Bill Phebus’ company, Great Lakes Aerial Survey. Mike
flew, tracking Whooping Cranes from Michigan and WI, during migrations to Florida for the
International Crane Foundation for several years. Mike spent a year in Mattock, England at New
Tribes Mission.
Michael and Irina Hubert were married in Manitowoc, December 14, 2001 which was followed
by a church ceremony, in Detmold, Germany, February 9, 2002. Their family traveled to many
countries and throughout the U.S.
Survivors include wife, Irina (Hubert) Frakes and son and daughter, Eli and Naomi of
Sheboygan Falls; parents, Rita and Norm, Mazomanie, and brother, Matthew J. Frakes,
Sheboygan. Uncles and aunts, Sharon and Roger Carlson, Kiel and Richard and Patricia Hansen,
Middleton; cousins Dale and Vicki Carlson, and daughter, Lea; D’Ann Carlson, and Terry
Hansen and son, Cruise; and longtime friend, Brian Worthing. Mike was predeceased by
grandparents, Edward and Janice (Sheafor) Hansen and Sheldon and Evelyn (Walkush) Frakes
Dickinson Shand, and step-grandpas, Arthur Dickinson and Charles Shand, and aunts, Audrey
and Marilyn Frakes.
A celebration of life will be held at Sheboygan Evangelical Free Church 1710 N. 15th St. on
Saturday October 16, 2021. Visitation from 9 a.m. until the time of service at 10 a.m. with light
refreshments to follow.
