It was a great start. Eric Schmitz had faced the minimum with a no-hitter through four innings and left after five with a one-hit shutout. But now he could only watch. His 1-hit shutout had turned into a 4-4 tie in the 11th inning
What he saw was good.
Drew Lechnir, who the night before had graduated from high school, and was making his Sheboygan A’s debut, ripped a double and scored the winning run when Ryan Fields pop fly was mishandled. Fields, an infielder, then went out for his third inning on the mound and survived a walk and a base hit with two strikeouts to end the game.
Mark Wanner and Logan Vietmeier both had two hits. Jake Arens drove in two runs with a double and Josh Gates had a double.
The win puts the A’s at 2-1 in the Northeastern Wisconsin League and 4-3 overall.
Next up is a weekend series with American Baseball Congress reigning national champion Lombard Orioles. The Orioles have won or shared the Wisconsin State League title for the past 15 years.
Saturday’s doubleheader starts at 4 p.m. Saturday will be Pawsitism Night, with Pawsitism puppies at the game. Pawsitism's mission is “to provide a family with a personally and professionally trained service dog that will enhance the life of a child with autism and ensure success through continuing education for the family”. The pups will deliver the game ball, do their own version of the mascot race, sign “pawtagraphs”, and be available for photo ops.
Sunday's games start at 1 PM. Sunday is Meijer Family Day. Bring the family out the park and enjoy $1 hot dogs and $1 sodas. Kids get to run the bases post-game, and players will be available for autographs. Plus, kids can enjoy a bouncy house presented by Bounce Bringers.
