A modest creek that wanders through parklands in the city of Port Washington is getting a not-so-modest sum of money towards its restoration. The $500,000 investment comes from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Coastal Management fund, and is part of a total $4.6 million influx of cash announced on Thursday by Governor Evers. The remaining $4.1 million was steered towards the Gile Flowage Land Conservation Project in Iron County.
Port Washington will now be able to develop plans to restore the entire 1.8-mile Valley Creek urban riparian corridor which is considered an important Lake Michigan coastal tributary. The restoration plans will include nature-based solutions to prevent degradation, protect critical infrastructure, reduce flooding risk, and restore local habitats.
Port Washington City Engineer and Public Works Director Robert Vanden Noven said they were excited to receive the award, which he said will enable the dream of a sustainable Valley Creek Corridor to become a reality.
