With unemployment rates in east central Wisconsin consistently below the national average, competition to attract workers is rising with the latest volley coming from Fond du Lac. That city has launched a new talent attraction program aimed at recruiting both remote workers and local workforce talent, becoming the first Wisconsin community to launch on MakeMyMove. That’s an online platform created in 2020 that works as a free online directory where local governments and economic development organizations post their official resident-recruitment programs, and also makes relocation and incentive packages available.
Fond du Lac will now actively recruit new residents by offering up to $9,500 in relocation incentives and local experiences. The packages include a $5,500 cash relocation stipend plus perks ranging from YMCA memberships and Dock Spiders baseball experiences to golf packages, art access, local dining, family activities and unique farm experiences.
Sheboygan and Fond du Lac share similar issues: an aging population and stalled population growth, factors that work against business growth and expansion. For its part, the Sheboygan County Chamber offers the Make Your Mark initiative, a program backed by state workforce funding that offers up to $1,500 in relocation assistance, temporary dorm-style housing and direct connections to over 60 local hiring managers in the fields of manufacturing, healthcare, and IT. Sheboygan County currently claims 3,000 available jobs, while the job site Indeed quotes 12,065 jobs available in Fond du Lac County.
