An annual effort to increase safety on national highways and reduce accidents is now underway across Wisconsin and other states. It’s called “Click It or Ticket”, referring to citations related to lack of seat belt use. That violation enables issuance of tickets or warnings to drivers in an effort to remind motorists that seat belts save lives.
According to preliminary data from the Wisconsin State Patrol, 7,636 crashes during 2025 in Wisconsin involved motorists who weren’t wearing seat belts. Of those, 145 deaths resulted and there were 1,876 injuries suffered by occupants who were unbelted.
The Click It or Ticket campaign happens twice yearly, on Labor Day in the fall, and now near Memorial Day covering the first long holiday weekend of the summer. Anyone curious for more information on the campaign can visit nhtsa.gov/clickit.
