Recent rains have swollen the Sheboygan River, overflowing its banks and prompting the National Weather Service to issue a Flood Warning to be in effect until early Friday morning.
The river gauge at Esslingen Park reached “Minor” flood stage of 8 feet by 11:30 this Tuesday morning, and was expected to peak at 9.2 feet by 1 AM Wednesday. Absent of more substantial rains, the level is predicted to then slowly decline below the Action stage of 6 feet by Saturday afternoon.
Already minor flooding is affecting low-lying areas near the river, and it’s expected that docks on Sheboygan’s riverfront and marina will become covered. Should levels reach slightly higher than predicted – 9.5 feet – then Woodland Road west of the Sheboygan County Airport would need to close between Rio Road and Willow Road along with a section of Alpine Road near the Airport. Flooding could also be expected in parts of River Park in Sheboygan Falls.
The last time the Sheboygan River crested at 9.2 feet was almost exactly 33 years ago, April 16, 1993.
