You may notice more patrols on roadways now through Labor Day as the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has officially launched its “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” push for sober driving. The effort happens around the Memorial Day and Labor Day holidays and will last now through September 7th. In Wisconsin, local police departments, county sheriff departments and the Wisconsin State Patrol will all participate.
Besides the usual focus on drunk driving, this year’s push also puts attention on motorcyclists with a “Ride Sober” campaign, as well as a “Drive High, Get a DUI” message for users of cannabis and other drugs. All three aim to reduce deaths on the road which for now, occur an average of once every 44 minutes within the 50 states…and that’s just for traffic deaths involving alcohol alone. The message for all remains the same: if you drive, don’t imbibe because if you do, it could cost you money, time in jail, and, worst case, your life and others.
