A City-owned building used for nearly 50 years to serve both youth as well as senior citizens of Sheboygan will soon be no more. Director of Planning and Development, Taylor Zeinert, announced on Tuesday that the former Senior Activity Center building at 428 Wisconsin Avenue will be demolished, with future plans for the site still to be determined.
The building was constructed in 1941 as the Sheboygan Youth Building, and then converted into the City’s Senior Activity Center in 1973. Those services are now provided at Uptown Social where over 2,000 active members socialize and engage in recreation and other wellness-related activities. The establishment of Uptown Social now makes the old center obsolete, while a 2020 study identified significant maintenance and safety issues that render the former building unsuitable for use.
All things considered, the City has decided to demolish the building as soon as a qualified contractor is selected.
