A 16-year-old girl from the Town of New Holstein has died from injuries sustained in a Thursday morning accident in that township.
The Calumet County Sheriff’s Office’s preliminary investigation indicates that the girl was driving eastbound on Foundry Road just before 7:30 Thursday morning when it struck a vehicle that was southbound on Plymouth Trail, sending both off the roadway and into the ditch. Eastbound Foundry Road is controlled by a stop sign at that intersection, while southbound Plymouth Trail has the right-of-way.
Responding authorities report that the 16-year-old driver died at the scene, while her 16-year-old male passenger from the Town of New Holstein was transported to Ascension Calumet Hospital in Chilton with non-life-threatening injuries.
The driver of the southbound vehicle, a 16-year-old male from the City of New Holstein, was taken to Aurora Medical Center Sheboygan for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.
The accident remains under investigation with the assistance of the Wisconsin State Patrol, and names of those involved are not being released at this time.
The deceased was a student at New Holstein High School, which placed counselors on call to assist students, families and staff.
Although no mention was made of it in the official report, the sun would have been almost directly in the east at the time of the accident, and drivers are typically advised to use extra caution when driving on east-west roads during the weeks nearest the autumnal and vernal equinox due to the glare of the sun.
