MADISON, WI (WTAQ-WRN) — At the Capitol, an ambitious Republican shared revenue bill passed a committee vote on Thursday.
The bill increases state shared revenue to local governments. Beloit Democrat, Representative Clinton Anderson, says the process was rushed.
“It was not ready and frankly this process is dysfunctional. Let’s slow down, let’s have a real bipartisan conversation,” said Anderson.
The measure would increase funding to local governments by $227 million over the next two years. The new funding could only be spent on police, fire and EMT services, emergency communications, public works and transportation. Shared revenue would be tied to the state sales tax and increase with inflation.
The vote was along party lines in the Assembly Committee on Local Government. Committee chair, Representative Todd Novak of Dodgeville, said the bill will be amended next week in the full Assembly.
Governor Tony Evers has threatened a veto if it’s not modified.
