An unprecedented February rainstorm caused numerous localized flooding of roadways and put sump pumps into overdrive, but it’s not likely to put the Sheboygan River over its banks.
The National Weather Service put rainfall at the Sheboygan County Airport at 1.66 inches total on Monday, nearly all of that falling within a 5-hour period beginning around 6 a.m. Near Adell a tenth of an inch of freezing rain coated the area by 9:30, while Cleveland reported an inch of rain by 10:30 a.m.
With the ground still frozen, most of the water is headed for rivers and Lake Michigan, but that’s not likely to cause flooding around here.
The Sheboygan River is expected to peak later today at about 5-1/2 feet at the Esslingen Park monitoring station, short of the “action level” of six feet and well below minor flood state of 8 feet. Only light precipitation is expected before the next system arrives on Friday, and with a high degree of uncertainty, forecasters are watching that as a potential snow producer ahead of a warming trend next week.
