Dorothy Verhage Mohr was born April 20, 1920, at St. Nicholas Hospital in Sheboygan, Wisconsin to
Jacob and Hattie Verhage. She graduated from Sheboygan High School in 1938, attended Mission House
College from 1938-1940, and Milwaukee State Teachers College from 1940-1942, graduating in 1942.
She taught kindergarten for two years in Merrill, Wisconsin from 1942-1944. She met her husband
George A. Mohr while at Mission House College. They were married June 21, 1944, at Hope Reformed
Church in Sheboygan by Rev. John Mohr, father of the groom.
Her husband was pastor of St. John’s United Church of Christ in Waukegan, Illinois for seven years,
Peace UCC in St. Paul, Minnesota for seven years, and Zion UCC in Sheboygan for 25 years from 1958-
1983.Ater his death she lived for 35 years in her beloved condo at Cross Creek on Sheboygan’s south
side.
Dorothy took an active part in all the church women’s organizations and taught Sunday school during
those years. Outside of the church she did volunteer work teaching in the Laubach Literacy Program.
She spent thirty years as a volunteer at Sheboygan (Aurora) Memorial Hospital. She was formerly a
member of the Sheboygan Women’s Club. She spent much time knitting afghans for all her children,
grandchildren, and great grandchildren. She knit over 2000 caps for the newborn babies at Memorial
Hospital. Her grandchildren received many of her knit clothing items.
Survivors are three sons and families: Rev. James D. Mohr (Karen) Neillsville, Wisconsin, William (Noi)
Mohr, Wisconsin Rapids, Wisconsin, Charles (Joan) Mohr, Cleveland, Wisconsin; six grandchildren and
spouses: Kristin Mohr (Michael Schening, partner in parenting), Jenny (Elliott) Friedel, Kurt (Jennifer)
Mohr, Anneke Mohr (Jackie Scott), Frederika Mohr, Karenna Mohr; six great grandchildren: Elise and
Avalyn Friedel, Malcolm and Frances Mohr, Josef and Evangeline Schening Mohr, one brother Roger
Verhage, Davis California, two bonus granddaughters Kylene (Stanley) Lichucki, Menomonie, Wisconsin
with Olliver and Corrine and Ashley (Wesley)Hagerman, Sheboygan with Avalynn, Eleanor and Vivian,
AFS son, Andreas (Margrit) Wolf of Küsnacht, Swizerland, whom she considered her fourth son, and Zeta
Wernecke, her good friend. She was preceded in death by her parents Jacob and Hattie Verhage,
brother Dr. Adrian and his wife Jean Verhage, and sister-in-law Nancy Verhage.
The family wishes to thank the staff of Sheboygan Senior Community for their loving and capable care to
our mother. Memorials may be designated for Lakeland University.
A funeral service will be held on Monday, September 26, 2022, at 11:00 AM at Grace United Church of
Christ, 500 School St, Kohler, Pastor Beth Petzke officiating. Relatives and friends may visit with the
family on Monday, September 26, 2022, from 10:00 AM until the time of service.
