Frederik Andersen made 33 saves for his first shutout of the season, helping the Carolina Hurricanes get off to the best start in franchise history thanks to a 3-0 win over the Boston Bruins on Thursday in Raleigh, N.C.
The Hurricanes are 6-0-0, extending their winning streak one game longer than the club mark that was previously set at the beginning of the 2019-20 season.
Andersen is the seventh goalie in NHL history to win his team’s first six games in a season, and he is the second to do so in his first season with a new team.
Tony DeAngelo, Nino Niederreiter and Andrei Svechnikov scored goals for Carolina, which is midway through a four-game homestand. Svechnikov’s tally went into an empty net.
Boston lost for the second night in a row to an undefeated team after falling 4-1 at Florida at the start of a two-game road swing.
Canadiens 4, Sharks 0
Jake Allen stopped 45 shots for his first shutout of the season and Montreal picked up its first victory in San Jose since 1999 with a shutout win over the Sharks.
It was the 22nd career shutout for Allen and first since March 8, 2020. His 45 saves were the second most in a shutout in Montreal history behind only a 52-save performance by Hall of Famer Jacques Plante on Nov. 13, 1955, at Chicago.
Josh Anderson had a goal and an assist and Mike Hoffman, Alexander Romanov and Brendan Gallagher also scored for Montreal, which produced more than one goal for just the second time in eight games this season. Adin Hill finished with 28 saves for San Jose, which lost its third consecutive game after starting the season with a four-game winning streak.
Flyers 2, Canucks 1
Sean Couturier collected a goal and an assist to lead Philadelphia over Vancouver, the Flyers’ second straight win to kick off a three-game trip through Western Canada.
James van Riemsdyk also scored for the Flyers while captain Claude Giroux collected two assists and goaltender Martin Jones made 27 saves in his hometown.
Quinn Hughes replied for the injury-riddled Canucks, who have lost two straight. Goalie Jaroslav Halak stopped 26 shots.
Sabers 4, Ducks 3 (OT)
Rasmus Asplund scored his second goal of the night at 4:16 of overtime to lift Buffalo over host Anaheim.
Zemgus Girgensons and Arttu Ruotsalainen also scored for the Sabres, Rasmus Dahlin collected two assists and Craig Anderson made 34 saves. Buffalo, playing the opener of a four-game West Coast road trip, won its second game in a row.
Troy Terry, Adam Henrique and Simon Benoit scored and Anthony Stolarz stopped 25 shots for Anaheim, which is 0-3-2 in its past five games.
Avalanche 4, Blues 3
J.T. Compher scored twice as Colorado handed St. Louis its first loss of the season.
Nazem Kadri and Cale Makar also scored for the Avalanche, who played without top winger Mikko Rantanen, defensemen Samuel Girard and Devon Toews, forwards Valeri Nichushkin and Stefan Matteau, and goaltender Pavel Francouz.
Brayden Schenn, Vladimir Tarasenko and Colton Parayko scored for the Blues, who had started 5-0 but played without Ryan O’Reilly (COVID-19 protocols), Oskar Sundqvist (knee surgery) and Brandon Saad (COVID-19 protocols).
Kraken 4, Wild 1
Defenseman Haydn Fleury scored twice as expansion Seattle put together the first winning streak in franchise history, defeating visiting Minnesota at Climate Pledge Arena.
Brandon Tanev and Mark Giordano added empty-net goals in the final minute and goaltender Philipp Grubauer made 30 saves for the Kraken, who won their second straight after a 5-1 victory against Montreal on Tuesday.
Ryan Hartman scored for Minnesota, which has lost two of its last three after opening the season with a four-game winning streak. Goalie Cam Talbot stopped 34 of 36 shots.
Jets 3, Kings 2
Pierre-Luc Dubois scored two goals and Kyle Connor had the primary assist on all three Winnipeg scores as the Jets rallied past host Los Angeles.
Andrew Copp netted the game-tying goal early in the third period, and Neal Pionk added two assists for Winnipeg. Dubois extended his points streak to six games as the Jets won their fourth consecutive game after opening the season 0-2-1.
Rasmus Kupari and Adrian Kempe scored goals for the Kings, who saw their losing streak extend to six games (0-5-1) following a season-opening victory over the Vegas Golden Knights.
Lightning 5, Coyotes 1
Alex Killorn scored twice in Tampa Bay’s three-goal first period as the Lightning won for the first time in four tries on home ice, throttling Arizona.
Killorn, who also posted an assist, notched two tallies inside the game’s first eight minutes to stretch his goal streak to three games and points streak to four. Steven Stamkos produced a goal and an assist and Alex Barre-Boulet and Andrej Sustr netted for the Lightning, who are 1-2-1 at home.
Andrei Vasilevskiy (4-2-1) allowed just Lawson Crouse’s third-period tally — one of 25 Arizona shots — and led the Lightning to their first consecutive wins in regulation this season.
Flames 4, Penguins 0
Goaltender Jacob Markstrom stopped all 45 shots he faced and Johnny Gaudreau had a goal and an assist as Calgary topped Pittsburgh to sweep a five-game road trip.
It was Markstrom’s 10th career shutout, his second of the season and his first in seven career appearances against Pittsburgh. Blake Coleman, Dillon Dube and Milan Lucic also scored, and Oliver Kylington had two assists for Calgary.
The Penguins took their second consecutive regulation loss after they had none through their first five games. They continue to play with a lineup depleted of five top players because of injuries and COVID-19 protocol.
