Wisconsin roads aren’t just for commuters and truckers, and with harvest season in high gear, the State Patrol has made Farm Vehicle Safety their October Law of the Month.
The Patrol said that over the past five years, 2,053 crashes involving farm equipment were recorded, resulting in 650 injuries and 28 fatalities with most occurring in the fall months, October being the peak.
Caution is the word when encountering tractors and harvest equipment by giving them plenty of space – and patience according to State Patrol Superintendent Tim Carnahan, who said that “Staying cautious, patient and aware behind the wheel can go a long way in safely sharing the road.”
It could also save you money and trouble, as it’s illegal to pass an agricultural vehicle in a no passing zone.
Farmers also bear responsibility for following the laws, observing weight limits and ensuring their vehicles meet all lighting and marking requirements.
