Sheboygan Fire Department crews went to work on Sunday Afternoon to quickly extinguish a fire that broke out on Sheboygan’s south side. Firefighters responded to the 1200 block of South 19th Street, adjacent to Moose Park, where a neighbor walking the area noticed the fire just before 5 PM Sunday and called 911.
Responders found a two-story residential structure with smoke coming from the second story of the home. Firefighters advanced a hoseline to the second-floor apartment where they encountered heavy smoke and located the fire in a bedroom. A followup search found no additional hotspots, and proceeded with salvage and overhaul operations.
It was confirmed that the lower level was unoccupied and all residents of the second-floor apartment were away at the time. They also found no working smoke detectors in that apartment.
While there were no injuries, four persons were displaced and an estimated $110,000 damage was incurred. The American Red Cross was called to assist the residents and the cause of the fire remains under investigation.
The SFD reminds residents that smoke alarms should be installed on every level of the home, inside each sleeping room and outside each separate sleeping area, and those units should be tested monthly while batteries should be replaced at least once a year.
