A group of Sheboygan residents attempting to reign in the use of Tax Incremental Districts for City development will be gathering signatures again on Tuesday. The event will be held on July 14th from 3:30 – 7:30 PM at the Emil Mazey Hall on Superior Avenue, just east of County Highway “Y”.
Organizers say the petition seeks to ensure that Sheboygan taxpayers have a direct voice when the City proposes large Tax Incremental Districts, or TID’s, that exceed commitments of $10 million. Copies of the petition will be available for voters to review before signing.
Earlier this year, Mayor Ryan Sorenson called the effort “…ultimately an obstructionist approach that would exacerbate the ongoing housing shortage and increase costs for residents and business alike”…”placing political hurdles in the way of development…”
Proponents of the petition state that their efforts are in pursuit of transparency, accountability, and giving taxpayers a stronger voice in major financial decisions.
