The National Weather Service is advising the public to prepare for an extended stretch of hot weather beginning on Monday. It’s possible that elevated heat and humidity could linger into the upcoming Independence Day holiday weekend.

A dome of hot air with heat indices approaching or exceeding 100º will smother much of the nation’s mid section, including the southern 2/3 of Wisconsin. Accordingly, an Extreme Heat Warning has been issued for Monday afternoon through early Tuesday evening. There is, however, a good chance that those living – or positioning within – areas immediately adjacent to Lake Michigan will be spared the worst. And while Monday and Tuesday will pose the most widespread risk of hot daytime weather in Wisconsin overall, Sheboygan itself will be most vulnerable on Thursday due to our local climate. What will not vary is the fact that heat index values will remain in the 70s each night this week, offering little relief from open windows overnight.

Forecasters advise staying hydrated and taking frequent breaks in outdoor job sites; never leave children or pets unattended in a locked vehicle; limit strenuous outdoor activities; and check up on the elderly, sick, and those without AC.
