Sheboygan has a long history with trees, a tradition that can be traced back to at least 1942. That’s when the City was officially designated the “City of Elms”. While most elm trees are long gone, Sheboygan celebrates 48 years as a “Tree City USA” designee tomorrow at 3:30 PM with its Arbor Day observances on the far north side.
The festivities will be at Charles Voigt Park at 8th and Eisner Avenue where North High School students will assist Department of Public Works crews in the planing of 18 trees. Mayor Ryan Sorenson will address the many benefits that trees bring to Sheboygan, and the City Forester will also demonstrate proper tree planting techniques for those planning their own additions.
New tree planting is just one of the many ways the City has maintained the status of the longest-running “Tree City USA” in all of Wisconsin, and is also observing its sixth year as a “Tree City of the World”.
