The Wisconsin Department of Transportation is urging drivers to use caution as multiple highways in northeast and north-central Wisconsin have experienced closures due to flooding. Because of the potential for more rainfall, other areas of the state could also be impacted as conditions change over the coming hours and days.
The DOT noted Highway 76 in Outagamie County as just one example of currently-flooded highways.
The DOT said that it is common for roads to be flooded during or after heavy rains, and according to the National Weather Service, more than half of all flood fatalities are vehicle-related. Any reported conditions requiring closure are noted on the DOT’s 511 webpage, which can be checked for planning or en route.
Rules of thumb for drivers:
Never drive into standing water.
Only 6 inches of water will reach most undercarriages causing loss of control or stalling.
If barriers are encountered, turn around and find another route.
Never walk in flood waters.
