Sustained cold weather has essentially frozen the southern portion of Green Bay, prompting the US Coast Guard to close the waters to commercial traffic southwest of a line between the Peshtigo Reef Lighthouse and Sherwood Point Lighthouse at the western extreme of Sturgeon Bay.
The Coast Guard explains that the closure will minimize the risk to recreational users, and facilitates winter activities including ice fishing on Green Bay. The closure is intended to last as long as ice persists.
