The chance that snow produced by cold air picking up moisture from the relatively warm waters of Lake Michigan is getting increasing attention from National Weather Service forecasters. The phenomenon, which more often affects shoreline areas from Milwaukee County southward, is suspected of being a factor even further north into Sheboygan County from Thursday night through Saturday.
Meteorologists explain that a few inches could accumulate in areas where snow bands come onshore for several hours at a time. However, the particulars can make-or-break such a snow event; not all particulars are in focus at this time and confidence remains low.
Rather than letting the public be caught off-guard, the NWS is advising awareness toward updated forecasts. At present, the most likely time frame for lake effect snow impacting Sheboygan County is from Friday evening until mid-morning on Saturday, and again a chance Saturday overnight. More confidence is given to temperature forecasts, which likely mean highs of 10 above or less until Friday, and wind chills remaining below zero until Saturday.
