A nearly 10,000-acre parcel of land in the Town of Plymouth has been granted Agricultural Enterprise Area status by the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection. The area, which became official on January 1st, is an area of productive agriculture, part of the state’s Farmland Preservation program which, by designation, should continue agricultural production and support investment in the agricultural economy. Landowners within the AEA are eligible to enter into voluntary farmland preservation agreements.
The area in Sheboygan County will be added to existing areas that have been the focus of intensive cover crop planting, increasing the quality of the area watershed, and benefiting from the county’s tree planting program. All areas under the AEA designation involve committing to all or a portion of the land to agricultural use while maintaining state soil and water conservation standards.
