A vigorous weather system is moving through the nation’s midsection, generating warnings from Minnesota to the east coast, with Wisconsin squarely in the target. For us in east-central Wisconsin, the impacts are from snow and wind.

NWS Graphic
Snowfall that began around 9 last evening wasn’t excessive by 4 AM Monday but roads were slippery, and winds were still building to a crescendo that was expected to peak around sunrise, with sustained around 30 MPH with gusts that could reach 50. A Wind Advisory and a Winter Storm Warning are both in effect until 6 PM today.

Snow that measured only an inch or two was expected to top out at around 2 inches in eastern parts of the county with anywhere from 2-6 inches to the west. Whatever falls is unlikely to stay put in the strong winds that will keep visibility low and roads slick until settling only slowly overnight. Meanwhile Lake Michigan was whipped into Storm Warning category with waves building to a capsize-worthy 15-20 feet.
Another round of light snow is likely on Tuesday while New Year’s Eve is expected to be quiet as temperatures drop to the single digits, and wind chills reach below zero by midnight.
