We may not have had a truly “White Christmas”, but a weekend weather event may put down a fresh coat for the New Year holiday.
The National Weather Service is growing increasingly convinced that a rainy Sunday will make a transition to snow later in the day as an invasion of cold from Canada displaces the milder air we’ve been spending the last week within. The transition is expected to begin after sunset Sunday with rain receding by midnight, setting the stage for a few inches of snow accumulation by sunup on Monday. All that will be topped with winds increasing to 25, maybe gusting to over 35 MPH, and driving wind chills to near zero.
That then sets the stage for a cold week, with New Year’s Eve forecast to be partly cloudy and breezy featuring highs in the upper teens, falling to the single digits by the time bells ring in the new year at midnight.
