Sheboygan is looking for its next Poet Laureate. Although the position might seem a bit obscure, estimates put the number of larger US cities with a Poet Laureate at some 35, with a significant number of smaller cities and towns also creating the role.
Liz Vihos has had the position since the City of Sheboygan established it in June of 2020, and the next will serve a term beginning this coming January and expiring in January of 2029 as only the second to hold the title.
The role is an honorary, volunteer role officially appointed by the mayor. Responsibilities include composing and presenting at least one original poem each year, to develop a community engagement plan, and to help select the successor for the following term. An honorarium of $300 annually is funded by Mead Public Library.
