An inmate at the Sheboygan County Detention Center died there on Sunday, with the cause yet to be determined.
The Sheboygan County Sheriff’s Office said that during a security check at the Center on Sunday, a Correctional Officer observed an inmate who was unresponsive in the shower of the housing unit. The inmate was removed from the shower, and despite lifesaving efforts of the correctional staff, he was pronounced deceased at the scene.
The Sheboygan County Medical Examiner was contacted, along with the Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s Office, to conduct a thorough, transparent, external investigation of the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The inmate has been identified as 65-year-old Pao Lee. According to Wisconsin Circuit Court records, Lee was in custody on a charge of 1st-Degree Intentional Homicide at the time, as well as on one charge of 1st Degree Reckless Injury, charges which were dismissed on Monday once the Court discovered that Lee had passed over the weekend.
Sheboygan County Sheriff Matt Spence said that the investigation into Lee’s death remains open and no further details would be released at this time.
(Editor’s Note – Lee’s charges were in connection to a “shooting incident” on September 5th on South Business Drive)
