Word started spreading through social media last week about the possible closing of Aurora-Sheboygan County’s Inpatient Behavior Health unit, and Aurora confirmed that intention with WHBL news late on Friday.
An official with the company said that Aurora Medical Center – Sheboygan County has experienced consistently high demand for Medical Surgical inpatient beds, with occupancy rates nearing 100%, something the company said reflects a growing need in our community, driven by increasing patient volumes and evolving care requirements.
To meet that demand, beginning on Friday, September 19th, the inpatient behavioral health floor at Aurora Sheboygan will be repurposed to create additional inpatient medical surgical bed capacity. The decision was made following a 67% decrease in behavioral health inpatients at Aurora Sheboygan at the same time that demand for outpatient behavioral health services increased. Aurora said that as such, all outpatient behavioral health services will continue to be offered locally in Sheboygan and surrounding communities, while inpatient services will transition to Aurora Psychiatric Hospital in Wauwatosa.
Aurora stated that it remains “…committed to supporting the comprehensive behavioral health needs of the Sheboygan community. Outpatient services for adolescents and adults facing mental health and substance use challenges will continue to be offered locally including…” its partial hospitalization program, intensive outpatient programs, outpatient behavioral health services and virtual behavioral health options, allowing individuals to receive care without an overnight stay.
The release concluded by stating that: “Our plan to create additional medical surgical beds reflects our ongoing commitment to aligning resources with community needs and ensuring access to the right care, in the right setting, at the right time.”
