Fire destroyed the garage of a southside Sheboygan home on Wednesday, but quick action prevented it from spreading.
Heavy smoke and fire greeted Sheboygan Fire Department crews when they arrived at the scene in the 1700 block of South 13th Street at around 5:30 PM Wednesday, about two minutes after getting the call. The property owner had safely evacuated the garage prior to crews arriving, and firefighters quickly suppressed the flames. Efforts succeeded in preventing spread of the fire to nearby structures, but not before the garage and its contents had been destroyed. Nobody was displaced as a result of the blaze, and the loss is estimated at $60,000.
Sheboygan Fire Department investigators determined the cause as “accidental”, and added a reminder to take precautions when working with flammable tools and materials such as a torch, grinder, or any heat-producing equipment.
