Kiel Fire and Rescue has credited working smoke detectors for alerting occupants of fire in time to escape harm, not just once, but twice in as many weeks.
The most recent example happened this Friday morning around 2:20 a.m. when Kiel Fire & Rescue responded to the report of a stove fire in the 900 block of N. 6th Street. Before crews could respond, the Manitowoc County Joint Dispatch Center advised that the fire was spreading, and the alarm status was elevated to draw more responders.
Once firefighters arrived it was confirmed that everyone had evacuated successfully, aided by Kiel Police, and within three minutes of arrival, the fire was suppressed with a water-based extinguisher and additional responses were cancelled.
Following the event and a final canvass for any lingering hot spots, it was determined that a working smoke detector alerted the three sleeping occupants of the lower unit, enabling them to escape safely before firefighters arrived.
The fire was apparently caused by a stovetop burner being left on with nearby combustible items catching fire as a result. About $25,000 damage was assessed, but there were no injuries.
Public Information Officer Lieutenant Kyle Preissner reiterated that working smoke detectors are essential in preventing loss of property and life, and urged people to check them regularly.
