Several Sheboygan County organizations will be better able to take care of a valuable resource thanks to a Wisconsin DNR grant.
$6 million in all was awarded on Wednesday to fund lake organizations, nonprofit organizations and municipal and county governments throughout the state. The Surface Water Grant program shares the cost for projects that restore and protect surface water resources in 2025 and beyond.
A number of Sheboygan County organizations benefit from this latest round of awards, among them, the Cedar Grove-Belgium School District, which received $25,000 from the River Surface Water Restoration Fund to convert around 25 acres of farmland to a naturalized upland-wetland system.
Among the 14 organizations receiving Lake Monitoring and Protection Funds was Sheboygan’s Lake Michigan Protection Network which received $12,148.74. The program is intended to support construction projects, alum treatments that remove phosphates from lake water, and for staff positions.
Those receiving Clean Boats Clean Waters grants included the Lake Ellen Association ($3,300), and the Elkhart Lake Improvement Association ($1,950).
Finally, a River Education Grant in the amount of $5,000 was awarded to the Environmental Park Trust of Sheboygan County for community engagement within the Pigeon River Watershed in Sheboygan and Manitowoc counties.
