A combination of bitterly cold arctic air and brisk northwest winds has prompted the National Weather Service to issue a Cold Weather Advisory for all but the northwest quarter of Wisconsin tonight. Not that this particular area is any better off – they have an Extreme Cold Warning for dangerously cold wind chills as low as 35 below zero that could cause frostbite in as little as 10 minutes to exposed skin.

For the remainder, including the Sheboygan area, a cold weather advisory will do, effective from 9 p.m. until noon on Tuesday, with wind chills dipping close to the 30 below zero warning threshold. NWS meteorologists acknowledged that portions of Fond du Lac and Sheboygan Counties could briefly dip beyond that limit, but the need for warnings was not anticipated here.
Concern is focused on anyone needing to spend time outdoors in temperatures of -10 to -15 degrees while winds blow at 10-15 mph. Hazards of exposure include frostbite, hypothermia, frozen pipes and a threat to pets, which should be brought indoors. It’s important to dress in layers for the cold, covering completely, and to limit time spent outdoors. People are also reminded to check on the elderly to ensure their safety.
In the morning, any children waiting for the bus should be dressed in an insulated coat with scarf, stocking cap, gloves or mittens, socks and boots. Although the extreme conditions will be short-lived, the NWS said that preparation is still essential.
