A Sheboygan County conservation organization has once again been given money from the State of Wisconsin to protect the Sheboygan River Watershed.
Sheboygan River Progressive Farmers was granted $22,000 in the tenth round of awards from the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection’s producer-led watershed protection grant program. Another regional organization, Cedar Creek Farmers, was awarded $8,000 in the latest round announced on Wednesday. One million dollars in all was awarded to 14 farmer-led groups for 2025 in amounts ranging from $5,100 up to $32,000.
The DATCP says that grants have focused on providing conservation education to farmers, conducting on-farm demonstrations and research, issuing incentive payments for implementing conservation practices, organizing field days, and gathering data on soil health and water quality.
In 2023, groups in the program delivered conservation practices on over 1.5 million acres, an increase from 1.1 million acres in 2022. This includes a 15% increase in no-till practices, a 30% increase in nutrient management, and a 2% increase in cover crop adoption.
